Searching for our better half.

Quoting Aakar Patel from his interview in Femina, “Let me end with a story about Athenian comic playwright Aristophanes. It comes to us from Plato’s The Symposium. In the setting of a drinking party, all those gathered are invited to make speeches on what they think ideal love is. The most entertaining speech of the night is made by Aristophanes (in Plato’s writing). The playwright tells us why all of us have this urge to find our soulmate. When God created people, Aristophanes says, we were originally spherical creatures with four hands and four legs who moved in cartwheel movements. These spherical creatures contained both male and female sexes on either side ,joined in the sphere. Because they all got arrogant, God decided to cut them all down the middle as a punishment, giving them the shapes we human have today. One part was male and the other part was female. And ever since we poor humans have been running around looking for that ideal person who has been cut from us ,from whom we have been separated and who makes us whole. ‘And’, Aristophanes says,’when two people who were separated find each other, they never again want to be separated.’ “

Seems as good explanation as any. šŸ™‚
